Final four days of THE DEAL campaign.

If you guys are able to, please contribute to our campaign. You will be supporting a group of hungry filmmakers who live in the mountains who are passionate about spotlighting a place where we can make really great movies.

I hate doing this sort of thing, but if you have a couple of bucks to contribute, I would really appreciate it and not only will I never ask you guys for money again but I’ll also owe you a beer, or some other…favor. (?)

BEHIND THE SCENES video from yesterday. This is the opening scene where Jonathan Volcrum (Michael Fisher) is coming home, he’s a lot down on his luck, and the Landlord (Jon Fremante, smiling at the camera) approaches him.

This video was shot by the indispensable Sunny Rozakis, while Dave operated the boom microphone (in picture here but not in Jordan’s rectangle), and TJ giving direction.

I know, I know, I said I would post more from the shoot, but unfortunately my Droid Incredible has about a two hour battery life when I’m using it extensively. This is why I need a tablet of some kind.

Anyway, here is a video Sunny shot with my phone from behind the scenes of our movie and while I don’t really have the time or the attention to spend going soup to nuts writing, directing, and editing a film I do enjoy taking part in the process. Since we’re such a small crew, someone has to fill in the other necessary parts like being a runner and handling the boom mike and it doesn’t give me much responsibility because the rest of the time—during the semester—I don’t have much time to do anything else. Working on a film is great to break up the repetition of teaching and writing comics and I welcome the opportunity to get out from behind the computer and the constant day-in-day-out of being a walking stand-up act talking about writing and making sure the kids are at least interested in reading.

Hey we were featured on the front page of the Adirondack Daily Enterprise this weekend. Check out the article: New company tries to expand filmmaking in the Adirondacks.

Along with that, Tim talked extensively about our mission.

Earlier today, Tim and I went through the third cut of the film and I can safely say things are progressing nicely.

I was pretty shell-shocked that we made it to the front page of the Adirondack Daily Enterprise—the largest regional newspaper—but, man, I am just over the wall with the amount of local support for what we’re doing. Sorry if this blog has sort of become a shill-o-meter, but I’m just really proud of the work we’re doing and I hope you guys will like it.

Also, check out that badass photo of John Kiedaisch, our private eye known as Peter Sumpter. His performance is like Eastwood in Gran Torino.

“For the past two years or more, our group has been itching to do a short film. We wanted to use Adirondack locations, local talent and our story-telling abilities to create a narrative compelling in plot and stimulating in visuals. Well, we finally did it with The Deal. It took great effort over many months, from writing to storyboards, then on to screen tests and lining up every detail for the three long (and sweaty!) shooting days. The greatest advantage to shooting in Lake Placid was its diverse locations. In addition to the ever-amazing mountain views and serene lakes, we have Judy’s big and beautiful apartment, Jonathan’s small-town office and a beautiful Main Street. The diversity of seasons and weather in the Lake Placid area provided us options for our story. We all pooled our resources and ideas to make this thing work - and it does! The project is now in the post-production phase. Watching the rough cut for the first time, Jonathan’s predicament firmly took my attention.”

Hey, so, it’s my bud’s birthday today. That’s his baby daughter. I know, I know, I know! Sorry for the emotional appeal, but aren’t they just freaking BEAUTIFUL? I don’t know about you guys, but I count myself extremely lucky to have them in my life.

“Thinking about starting a Rumpus tumblr. Just keeping up with the times. Last night we had a good conversation about tumblr, Pintrest, and Instagram. I don’t know how to use any of these things and I pretty much despise Facebook, though I still use it when I want to ask if anyone is getting rid of a couch, or has extra plates and silverware. We also talked about a service that allows you to create programs that repost your blogs on Facebook and Twitter but won’t work with Pintrest. I suppose we’ll have to start a Rumpus Instagram as well. One of the things that was said last night was that running a website was like a drug addict selling crack. Someone said that thoughts, realizations, the foundations of stories, happen in-between, and when you’re always online or checking your phone there is no in-between. We also talked about the different between fans and audience, reach versus community. I’m trying to spend less time online, I said. I have a movie to make. On the other hand, you can’t fight the river.”

We struggle with a similar thing. We have a main website, a Twitter, and a Facebook. Considering we’re a group of people who like to celebrate writing and film, we’re creators who also have day jobs. In many ways, this is indicative of the area we live in. In the Adirondack Park, most people wear many hats just to make a living. This is perfect for those of us who have different interests. For me, (Dave) I’m a comic book writer, an English professor with four classes, and I’m also a producer and co-founder of the company whose blog you are currently reading. Tim is a father with two beautiful kids and a brilliant lady for a partner, he’s also a director and video cameraman, and a novelist who has written seven books and is constantly plugging away at that side of his career. Our brilliant manager, Sunny can literally do anything. She’s an actor, producer, photographer, and sales manager at one of the biggest hotels in Lake Placid. We wouldn’t be able to get anything done without her.

Our small group is still growing and forming. It is cliche, but like many creative projects we’re still in progress. That’s the idea, to always be growing. This place is for who we are, and the main website is for news and events and programs we’re involved with. Twitter and Facebook is a consolidation of everything, and we sincerely hope you’ll help us finish our first film. You’ll be helping out a couple of dreamers who want to spotlight an area we love.
