From The Stars Below, the new Monkeybrain comic by Zack Smith and Rich Ellis.
This was a delightful read, silent, and very much like Karl Kerschl’s The Abominable Charles Christopher. I’m of course a huge fan of the Eisnerian credits featured in the second picture.
You should pick it up, because through all of November Monkeybrain is donating their sales to the Hero Initiative, which provides basic services to creators who can’t afford health insurance, rent, and other basic needs. Publisher Chris Roberson says:
As we in the United States prepare to celebrate the American holiday of Thanksgiving, please consider giving thanks to the veteran creators who have given us so much over the years by donating to the Hero Initiative. And we encourage other publishers to join us in supporting the Hero Initiative through direct donations. Unless and until creator royalties and equity participation policies are made retroactive, charities like the Hero Initiative are the only support many veteran creators have available to them.
Stars Below is a good comic that is really accessible if you happen to have a little one, which is something you can say about most of the Monkeybrain books. You should also consider Roberson’s great collaboration with Dennis Culver on Edison Rex, Amelia Cole, Kevin Church’s Wander, and the absolutely brilliant Bandette. Give them a try, it won’t cost you much and you’ll be sending money to a cause that embraces our creative community and helps them acquire basic human rights.
Man, this stuff looks really great, and I’m loving Chris Roberson and Dennis Culver, and Colleen Coover, and Mogul logo designer Dylan Todd. Go indy comics!
